Notes:
- This album was first released in 1958, shown is a 2023 reissue on Sam Records. It was recorded on February 13 and 14, 1958 in Paris.
- Discogs suggests this album was first released in the UK in 1958, the French release (of which the version shown is a replica) is supposed to be from January 1959, which is based on the code ’19’ (Jan. 1959), printed on the back cover. I guess the French issue came first though and there could be an issue with a different code. The Sam Records website indicates the French album is the original pressing from 1958. Philips N 77.312 L by Kenny Clarke’s Sextet, an album with a later number, was released in May 1957, based on the code 57 on the back cover. This may add to the confusion, though Philips’ numbering system is far from consistent.
- This jazz album (erroneously listed under Philips Popular series) was recorded with members of the Modern Jazz Quartet: Milt Jackson (piano), Percy Heath (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums). Gana M’Bow, who wasn’t in the MJQ, plays percussion on “Swing 39” and “Minor Swing”. Based on the information on the LP cover and labels, this album shouldn’t be credited to Barney Wilen alone, but to all musicians involved. The Sam Records website lists this as a Barney Wilen album, and I guess it’s commonly referred to as such.
